Addo Elephant Park

Anyone remember that cute cartoon called 'Nellie the Elephant'? The theme song went something like this-

Nellie the Elephant packed her trunk
And said goodbye to the circus
Off she went with a trumpety-trump
Trump-trump-trump

Anyway, this weekend a heard of us photosoc members made our way to Addo Elephant Park for the day where the elephants were most definately not from the circus. Most of us were pretty excited to see elllies up close for the first time so when a whole heard (about 20) walked right past the open door of our mini-bus it was rather thrilling! I could almost smell the dust on their crinkled skin they were so close!!

We managed to tick warthog, Kudu (they were huge!), a tortoise, ostrich, a very dead and very stinky buffalo, a secretary bird and monkey's off our list. To the disappointed of some we weren't able to spot a lion or zebra this time....

All along the way there are signs warning not to drive over any animal dung on the road. This is because dungbeetles lay their eggs in this dung. These flightless dungbeetles are becoming more and more scarce and need to be protected.

We were very envious of the MASSIVE lenses that were casually slung around some of the other visitors necks. One day, guys, one day....

I definately suggest this trip for those of you who aren't so keen on the big hiking trips we do. We are hoping to go again next term.
Enjoy :)
